Ontario Supporting Healthy Child Growth and Development
by Bob Montgomery
The Ontario government is increasing the annualized funding of the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program.
Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says the Huron Perth Public Health Unit will receive a substantial increase of $101,281 to better support children’s development and family well being in Huron and Perth. The program connects vulnerable families to key prevention, early identification and intervention services.
The Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program is free and delivered through local public health units. The program offers home visits to families at risk for challenges affecting healthy child development, starting from the prenatal stage through to the child’s transition to school. It also provides universal screening for families after the birth of their babies.
Thompson says this funding announcement is part of the government's additional investment of more than $11.7 million in healthy child development programs across the province.
North Huron Looking For New Home For The Blyth Library
by Bob Montgomery
North Huron Council is looking for a new home for the Blyth Library.
North Huron Reeve Paul Heffer says the library is currently located on the main street in Blyth, but the owner wants the building back to use it for something else. Heffer says it's costing the municipality $18,000 a year to rent the space so they're hoping they can a find a space that the municipality owns and save that money.
Heffer says one possibility they're considering is moving the library to the upstairs of the Blyth Arena. He says that space doesn't get a lot of use now and it's a fairly big space so it could accommodate a library, so they've asked staff to bring back a report on how much it would cost to put the library there. Heffer says they're looking at other options as well but they'd like to see it located in a building the municipality owns.

North Huron Is Looking At The Feasibility Of Expanding Childcare Services
by Bob Montgomery
The Municipality of North Huron is looking at their options for expanding their childcare service.
Reeve Paul Heffer says there is a provincial grant available that would help and they've been invited to submit an application. He says right now they've outgrown the facility they have in Wingham. They're very limited in what they can do there and they don't have a facility at all in Blyth, where they have a waiting list of over 100.
Heffer says at this point they're considering applying for the grant and they'll wait to see it that's successful. He says if they get a grant they would put a daycare centre in Blyth in 2025 and hope to improve the one they have in Wingham in 2026.
Heffer also points out, getting the facility is only part of the solution. They also have to find staff for the facility and that's a challenge now too.
