Summer Company Program Now Accepting Applicants

Applications are now being accepted for Huron County's annual Summer Company program.
The Summer Company helps students between the ages of 15 and 29 who want to start their own business. Successful applicants will receive up to $3,000 in start-up funds as well as business training throughout the summer. United Way Perth-Huron and the Northern Huron Community Committee are proud to announce results from the Coldest Night of the Year event in Wingham.

Goderich High School Student Spent Twelve Hour Outside In Goderich Last Friday Night To Find Out What It's Like To Be Homeless

A sixteen year old high school student from Goderich joined Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet and Councillor Randy Carroll for twelve hours on the streets last Friday night.
April Selkirk says she grew up in a very giving family and saw her first homeless person when she was six or seven years old on a trip in Toronto with her grandmother. She has seen homeless people here who were much younger than she is, so it made sense to her to find out what it was like for people of all ages to become homeless and see what she could do to address the problem. She says last Friday was quite a challenge and she can't imagine what it would be like to live like that for 24 hours a day, every day.

Three Options Still On The Table For The Goderich Memorial Arena

The Goderich Memorial Arena Task Force met on Monday morning to discuss options for the arena.
Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet says they'll have a special council meeting on March 3rd at which time a recommendation will be made to council regarding which consultant they would like the municipality to hire to continue the process of gathering public input around what residents of the town would like to see done with the arena. The arena was closed in January until further notice over safety concerns.

Lake Huron Coastal Centre Now Accepting Applications For The Geoff Peach Memorial Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted by the Lake Huron Coastal Centre for the Geoff Peach Memorial Scholarship.
Two grants per year of up to $1,500 are available to students conducting research along the Lake Huron coast. Geoff Peach was an environmental advocate whose actions and influence spanned three decades along the Lake Huron coast. The Geoff Peach Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to continue Geoff's work and that of Lake Huron Coastal Centre. It is available to university graduate students (Masters and PhD) with conservation and environmental research interests.
Applications for Great Lakes research will be considered, however preference is given to Lake Huron research projects. Applicable research topics include: Biodiversity, Coastal Processes, Dune Conservation, Water Quality, or Plastic Pollution

Superintendent Of Corporate Services Presented Avon Maitland Trustees With Ten-Year Enrolment Projections At This Week's Board Meeting

Avon Maitland District School Board Superintendent of Corporate Services Cheri Carter shared the long-term student enrolment projection at last night's board meeting.
Carter says Watson & Associates Economists prepares the ten-year projection for the board every year so that the board has current data to work with when they do their planning. This year's projections indicate an increase at the elementary level of about twelve percent over the next ten years and the secondary level shows a projected increase of about nine percent. Single Motor Vehicle Collision Into Local Business
The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police responds to a single motor vehicle collision involving a local business. Extensive damage occurred.
On February 27 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Huron County OPP, alongside local emergency services responded to a single motor vehicle collision off Thames Road, Exeter involving a local business. The single occupant inside the motor vehicle sustained minor injury and no employees or customers inside the business were injured. The driver was taken to local hospital as a precaution.
The extent of the damage to the business is currently unknown, as well as the financial impact it might have regarding repairs and business operations.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation and there were no road closures as a result of the event.
The Huron County OPP is requesting anyone with information to call investigators at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2000.

NHL Hockey Heroes And Central Huron Firefighters Face-Off In Support Of Huron Hospice

On Saturday, March 15th at the Eastlink Arena in Clinton former NHL hockey players will suit up against Central Huron Firefighters in a Benefit Celebrity Hockey Game supporting the Central Huron Firefighters’ Charity of Choice, Huron Hospice.
The Central Huron Firefighters will face off against a full line-up of former NHL hockey heroes. The NHL roster includes, Dave McLlwain, Gary Leeman, Matt Martin, Dave Reid, Mike Zigomanis, Bernie Nicholls, Mike Krushelnyski, Larry Murphy, Dwayne Hay and Jamie Wright.

Huron Perth Public Health Is Reporting A Case Of Measles In A Huron Perth Resident

Huron Perth Public Health has reported the first laboratory confirmation of measles infection in Huron and Perth counties.
They have completed case and contact tracing and will not be providing any additional public details about the case. “There has been an ongoing measles outbreak in southwestern Ontario and we have been closely monitoring the situation,” says Dr. Lauren Hayward, Physician Consultant at HPPH. “Now is a good time to review information about measles and measles vaccination if you haven’t already.” Measles is a highly contagious virus. It is airborne and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. The virus can spread to other people when someone with measles coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes…
OPP Seeking Public Assistance To Locate Missing Person
The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police is seeking public assistance to locate a missing person.
There will be an increased police presence on the Maitland Trails around Goderich and in the area of the Hullet Marsh. The Huron County OPP is asking the public to avoid this area.
