Director of Environment With The Nuclear Innovation Institute Explains The Impact Of Climate Change On Huron County

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County is like anywhere else on our planet right in that we are affected by Climate Change, and the last few winters, with the exception of the last week or so, have certainly driven that point home.

Bayfield Heritage Committee Holds Special Meeting To Address Damage To The Albion Hotel

by Bob Montgomery

Days of heavy snow that had started to melt caused the roof of the Albion Hotel in Bayfield to collapse early Sunday morning.

Rain Sunday morning added to the weight and part of the roof also fell onto the Black Dog Pub, beside the Albion. The Albion is one of the oldest hotels on the main street and has been an icon of the village for several years. The Bayfield Heritage Committee met Monday afternoon to assess the damage. A drone was flown through the building and it was determined that the ceiling of the second floor is intact, so it is likely that the structure can be saved. Crews were scheduled to work…

Local Women Wins 100 Mile Ultra Race In Granger, Iowa

by Bob Montgomery

Heidi Meades from Clinton won the women’s division of the 100 Mile Stuffed Turkey Endurance Race in Granger Iowa last month.

She came in at 25:37:57, just under 2 hours ahead of the second place female finisher. Meades says she entered her first Ultra race in 2020 but she's been racing more consistently over the last few years. She ran another 100 mile race in Arizona a couple of weeks prior to the race in Iowa, but the record heat in Arizona prevented her from doing very well there. The climate in Iowa was very similar to what she is used to back home. It was about minus 7 degrees celsius when they started out in the morning but it didn't rain and it wasn't snowing and running for 25 hours as the temperature climbed up to a very comfortable 14 degrees celsius helped everyone gradually warm up. Meades says she hasn't decided when or where her next race will be but she would like to break the 24 hour mark for 100 miles.

Meades and her husband have five children and the whole family runs at different levels. They are also busy managing the Run Parlour running store on the main street in Clinton, just down from the town hall.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation and Exeter Lions Club Have Some Christmas Ideas For The Person Who Has Everything

by Bob Montgomery

If you're struggling to find that special Christmas gift for a loved one or a friend, two local charities are suggesting you consider shopping “green.”

A present doesn’t have to have wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons to be a gift, according to the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation. Anyone purchasing a ‘gift to nature’ receives a gift certificate (their choice of paper or email) they can give to the present’s recipient. They could buy someone a certificate for a snowshoe rental, for instance, or a conservation area family pass. They could also buy a bird-bat-butterfly box, either assembled or as a kit. They could also donate to a good cause on someone’s behalf. In the case of…
