June Robinson Memorial Hike for Hospice Will Be Held at a New Location on May 26th (Today)

by Bob Montgomery

Hospice Fund Development Manager Christopher Walker says the Hike for Hospice started in 2018, and will be held again this year, but this year the location has been moved to the Wheel House at the south end of Rotary Cove on the Goderich Beach. “It's a great location. It's super to be able to walk along the beach and hear the waves and the boardwalk is nice and flat and easy for people of all ages to manage. And at the end of the Hike we have a Barbeque.”

Walker says this is an important fundraiser for the Hospice because the revenue from this particular Hike allows them to provide around the clock nursing care at Bender House. So the more money they raise, the more people they can take care of at the Hospice at no charge…

South Huron Council Is Moving Forward With An Updated Community Improvement Plan

by Bob Montgomery

South Huron Mayor George Finch says the Community Improvement Plan is an Economic Development tool and an opportunity for municipalities to renew their commitment to community improvement. He says it also encourages economic investment.

“A CIP is a way to support existing businesses and ensure they continue to be well positioned to maintain and grow their employment opportunities, plus it supports a competitive business environment.” Finch says they have several areas that they hope will benefit from the Community Improvement Plan. “We're looking at a…”

First THRIVE Economic Development Summit A Huge Success

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County's Director of Economic Development says their first THRIVE Economic Summit hosted at the Blyth Festival theatre was very successful.

The goal of the summit was to celebrate some of the things the Economic Development Department has been working on with their municipal partners over the last year and to look at some of things they're looking at moving forward. Director of Economic Development, Vicki Lass, says that includes things like housing and workforce and welcoming communities. But, the Summit also provided an opportunity to learn together about things like new technologies…

Partnership Between The Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health And The Goderich Legion Is Becoming Very Popular With Local Seniors

by Bob Montgomery

The partnership between the Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health and the Goderich Legion was launched just over two months ago.

Gateway Research Assistant Amy Sturgeon says the partnership consists of two programs. One of them is Legion Learning and the other is Legion Lounge. “Legion Learning is just connecting seniors with technology. Anyone fifty years old and over is welcome to drop in on any Monday or Friday and learn how to work an iPad, to work their phone, their computer. If they're confused with online banking they can get assistance there. We're going to have some guest speakers once or twice a month to come and talk about specific things.” And she says on June 3rd they're going to have an OPP officer visit and talk with seniors about how to avoid fraud and online scams over the phone and that will be at one o'clock that afternoon.

Legion Lounge is very much what the name suggests – it's a senior's arcade and coffee house

Perth County’s First-Ever Winery Opened Its Gates To The Public Last Weekend

by Bob Montgomery

Inspired by the region’s countryside charm to turn their 1860s heritage farm into ‘something fancy,’ Steve and Casey Howanyk made history this past weekend as The Perth Farmhouse Winery becomes the first-ever to open its doors in Perth County.

Located on the border of Perth County in the municipality of Perth East, The Perth Farmhouse is sure to attract local residents and visitors from the neighbouring regional municipality of Waterloo and beyond. The vineyard is planted with five cold-climate grape varietals that the first-generation farmers are excited to serve alongside artisanal graze boxes sourced from local farms.

Offering more than just a tasting – Perth County Tourism is thrilled to be adding The Perth Farmhouse Winery as a

Goderich Council Looks For Public Input Into Strategic Action Plan

by Bob Montgomery

About thirty-five Goderich residents attended a public meeting Wednesday night hosted by members of Goderich council.

The objective was to get public input into council's Strategic Action Plan for 2023 to 2027. The meeting was held at the Memorial Arena and one of the issues that generated a lot of discussion was the future of the Memorial Arena. Mayor Trevor Bazinet pointed out the arena hasn't been marketed properly since the ice was taken out, but it's there for people to use it for any number of things. “Our seniors use it for shuffle board, we have Home and Garden Shows there, we had our vaccination clinic there, we've had council debates there during elections, wrestling events have been held there, so essentially everyone has been able to use the facility for whatever they want.” But, it's only generating about nine-thousand dollars a year in revenue. So the question is, do they continue doing what they're doing or do they look at organizations like child care or the seniors centre that are currently over capacity and could be accommodated at a refurbished Memorial Arena.

Another area that generated a lot of discussion is the

Central Huron Mayor Says Council Is Ready To Address Parking Issues in Clinton

by Bob Montgomery

Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn says council has received the results of a consultants study on the parking issues in downtown Clinton.

Ginn says there's a lot to it and council has made the decision to address the problem in small bites. There are two situations they're going to look at now. “One is the vacant lot across from the town hall. Plans call for two floors of residential units to go in there, so up to eight apartments, and they don't have parking areas for them. And the other one is on Isaac Street. It's the short part that's one way and historically they did park there. So, we're going to enter into negotiations with both of them and there will be a…”
