Week of April 28th to May 4th, 2024

Good day,

We’re finally settled at the new Huron County News headquarters, and back in full swing. We didn’t publish as many stories as we like to early in the week due to the fact that we didn’t have an internet connection, but we expect to be back to our usual pace starting this week. Thanks again for your continued support.

Here’s another weekly round-up of stories from around the county, and as always, some trivia questions to help us learn about the rich history of what has come to be known as Huron County.

Thank you for checking out the Huron County Newsletter and have a great week.

by Bob Montgomery

Huron Shores Area Transit launched a customer data collection campaign to gather passenger information to help fine-tune the transit system’s services.

Transit Coordinator Susan Mills says the campaign features a series of six one-question polls designed to gain insight into passenger needs and demographics. “We want to be able to answer the question for our councillors when they ask who's taking the buses and why are they taking them and really there hasn't been any research done since Huron Shores Area Transit came into being.”

So, they've put together the polls, and they'll be released every two weeks from now until mid-July. “They're very quick to answer…

Last week Huron Perth Public Health issued 1557 suspension orders to elementary and secondary students whose immunization records are incomplete.

Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act students may be suspended from school starting on May 23rd if their records are not updated by that time. Huron Hospice Receives Gold Level Music Certification

by Bob Montgomery

Huron Hospice has received the coveted Gold Level Music Care Certification from the Room 217 Foundation.

That makes Huron the first Hospice in Canada to receive that recognition. Huron Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Deb Shelley says music has always played an important role at Huron Hospice Bender House. “Local musicians volunteer their time and talent to play at the hospice. Whether it's spiritual, folk, Celtic or the lyrical sounds of a harp, we know music soothes the soul. With Certification, we better understand music's importance for our residents, families, volunteers, and staff. Certification has allowed us to make music an integral part of our care”…

Town of Goderich Stands With Survivors

by Bob Montgomery

The month of May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and for this month the town of Goderich is ensuring that survivors of sexual violence are believed, supported, and encouraged to seek out services in our community.

Huron Women's Shelter Fund Development Coordinator Genelle Reid says they are running the ‘We Stand With Survivors’ campaign, which coincides with the Sexual Assault Awareness month. She says Intimate Partner Violence has been declared an epidemic across the Province and Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence aren't part of all Intimate Partner Violence, but they do tend to contribute to one another, although there are some differences.

Reid says it's quite possible that the problem is more prevalent in rural communities because of the isolation in rural communities but

by Bob Montgomery

The Superintendent of Corporate Services for the Avon Maitland District School Board says the Stratford Area Boundary Review is now in the hands of the board's trustees.
